10th Anniversary Celebration In coordination with the Armory Park Senior Center 30th Anniversary Reunion, February 16-19 2007, SeniorNet Tucson Learning Center celebrated the 10th Anniversary in operation at the Armory Park Senior Center. We were honored to welcome Kristin Fabos, Executive Director of SeniorNet Headquarters to the opening day activities. History The Tucson Learning Center began in June of 1996. Someone scanning the Internet learned about setting up a SeniorNet Learning Center and informed Robin Nagore, Supervisor Armory Senior Center. Robin was given the name of Joe Walton at SeniorNet in California. She called Joe Walton for information on setting up a learning center. Thus, Robin started the ball in motion and the Tucson SeniorNet Learning Center was created. On November 30, 1996 IBM sent a letter to all Tucson-area-retirees about Volunteering for the new SeniorNet Tucson Learning Center. An orientation, training and planning session for coordinators, instructors and coaches was held on December 3rd through 6th. We had Seventeen retirees from IBM, US West (Qwest) and Armory Senior Center club members volunteer for the training. IBM and US West sponsored the Tucson Learning Center. IBM furnished 6 computers, 2 printers, 1 scanner and software a total of $25,000 for equipment for teaching at Armory. US West furnished the telephone lines for the Internet and AOL sponsored the Internet connection. For two years IBM Tucson printed our student manuals. Our Grand opening festivities for the SeniorNet Learning Center took place January, 15, 1997, at Armory Park Senior Center. Tucson became the 94th SeniorNet Center in the nation and the first in Arizona.. On hand for the opening were Robin Nagore, Supervisor of Armory Park Senior Center, Roger Austin and Fred Wallace, Co-coordinators of the learning center; the inaugural class of students; and many interested prospective students.
